Stop Guessing Whether to Hit Driver or Iron

The predictor calculates strokes gained expectations using your actual dispersion data. It factors in lie type and distance remaining for every shot in your pattern, so you can see which club and target give you the best outcome before you swing.

Benchmarks That Match Your Game

Set your strokes gained benchmark to your playing ability. See exactly where you stand and what it takes to get to the next level.

Fine Tune the Course Map

The tool automatically identifies fairways, greens, bunkers, and water. When you need more precision, draw in trees, out of bounds, or heavy rough to get projections that match the course exactly as it plays.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shot Pattern tournament legal?

Yes. Shot Pattern's Tournament Mode is permitted in any event played under the Rules of Golf, including USGA, state amateur, NCAA, and AJGA events. Live strokes gained and the Strokes Gained Predictor are automatically hidden in Tournament Mode, while dispersion visuals, elevation data, and wind forecast all remain available.

How does Shot Pattern calculate strokes gained?

Shot Pattern calculates strokes gained on a shot by shot basis by comparing your actual result to the expected strokes to hole out from your starting position. The app uses distance and lie type for every shot, which means you see where you gained or lost strokes instead of only getting a round total. Most other golf apps only report aggregate strokes gained by category, not individual shots.

What is shot dispersion and why does it matter?

Shot dispersion is the pattern your shots actually land in with a given club. Most golfers only think about how far they hit it, but dispersion captures both distance and direction. That matters because smart course strategy accounts for the full range of outcomes, not just your best swing. Shot Pattern shows your dispersion as tee arcs and approach circles overlaid on the hole, so you can pick targets that keep your realistic miss in play.

Do I need extra hardware or sensors to use Shot Pattern?

No. Shot Pattern uses your iPhone's GPS to track shots automatically during a round, with no club sensors, wearables, or external devices required. You can also log rounds manually after play, or upload launch monitor data from a range session to build your dispersion faster.

How does the Strokes Gained Predictor work?

The Strokes Gained Predictor projects your personal shot dispersion onto any hole and calculates expected strokes gained for each club and target combination. It factors in the lie types in your landing zones using the course map, so it tells you whether driver or iron is the better play before you swing. For holes with incomplete map data, you can draw in trees, bunkers, or out of bounds areas and the math recalculates.

How much does Shot Pattern cost?

Shot Pattern is available on a free trial, then $14.99 per month or $99 per year. The annual plan saves 45 percent compared to monthly billing. Shot Pattern is available only on iOS and MacOS.

Does Shot Pattern work on Apple Watch?

Yes. Apple Watch users can drop breadcrumbs during a round to mark where each shot occurred, which makes post-round Manual Round Entry much faster.
